X-ray Variability Coherence: How to Compute It, What It Means, and How It Constrains Models of Gx339–4 and Cygnus X–1

چکیده

We describe how the coherence function—a Fourier frequency-dependent measure of the linear correlation between time series measured simultaneously in two energy channels—can be used in conjunction with energy spectra, power spectra, and time delays between energy channels to constrain models of the spectrum and variability of X-ray binaries. Here we present a procedure for estimating the coherence function in the presence of counting noise. We apply this method to the black hole candidates Cyg X–1 and GX 339–4, and find that the near perfect coherence between lowand high-energy X-ray photons rules out a wide range of models that postulate spatially extended fluctuating emission, thermal flares, and overlapping shot-noise. Subject headings: black hole physics — methods: statistical — X–rays: stars

Time Domain Analysis of Variability in Cygnus X-1: Constraints on the Emission Models

We use time domain analysis techniques to investigate the rapid variability of Cygnus X-1. We show that the cross-correlation functions between hard and soft energy bands reach values very close to unity and peak at a lag of less than 2 millisecond for energies separated by a factor of 10. This confirms that the process that produces X-ray photons at different energies is extremely coherent on ...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

How Neoliberalism Is Shaping the Supply of Unhealthy Commodities and What This Means for NCD Prevention

Alcohol, tobacco, and unhealthy foods contribute greatly to the global burden of non-communicable disease (NCD). Member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) have recognized the critical need to address these three key risk factors through global action plans and policy recommendations. The 2013-2020 WHO action plan identifies the need to engage economic, agricultural and other relevant...

The Physical Interpretation of X-ray Phase Lags and Coherence: RXTE Observations of Cygnus X–1 as a Case Study

There have been a number of recent spectral models that have been successful in reproducing the observed X-ray spectra of galactic black hole candidates (GBHC). However, there still exists controversy over such issues as: what are the sources of hard radiation, what is the system’s geometry, is the accretion efficient or inefficient, etc. A potentially powerful tool for distinguishing among the...
